HERBAL COLLECTION
ABOUT
A ritual that has always been a big part of my life growing up is that of tea-brewing. I fondly remember what at the time seemed like an infinite herb collection of my grandmother's. She would religiously grow her herbs in the back yard, harvest them when time came, bundle them up and dry them in order to store them.
Grandma was a big believer in herbal remedies which meant that, no matter what the problem was, she would always have a recipe for it. And so her ceremony would culminate in the following steps: measuring the right amount of each herb, grinding them all into a blend, boiling the blend and finally straining it. And there you have it: the perfect cup of tea.
In my attempt to reintroduce this ritual into my life, I designed a collection of items to help me do so. That, however, required streamlining the process to make it compatible with my current lifestyle. The steps of the ceremony that I focused on were those of storing, measuring, grinding and straining. Therefore, the objects I designed were a set of interlocking herb containers that will allow for my herb collection to endlessly grow, a cast iron mortar and pestle and a formed brass strainer. The pestle can also be used as a measuring spoon.
