ABOUT

As a part of a ‘RISD in Rome’ Map-Making course, I spent 4 weeks exploring Old Rome, using only a copy of Giambattista Nolli’s 1748 map of Rome. María Gabriela Carucci Álvarez and I partnered up to complete a scavenger hunt and produce a “map” that documented our journey through the city.

Our map was as holistic representation of our journey: it depicted not only our physical movements but also our constantly shifting emotional state and how that informed our interaction with the city and each location throughout the hunt.

This map consisted of a compilation of mementos from each place (including the book itself which was found during our explorations), ink transfers, poetry written by both at each location about our specific experience, as well as small blown up sections of the map to trace our path. Our end product also included a larger embroidered map of our journey, which, when overlaid over the Giambattista map, showed our overall trajectory.
